Since I didn't have all of the ingredients for <a href=\"https:\/\/thatrecipe.com\/2013\/07\/11\/green-tomato-chow-chow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Tomato Chow Chow<\/a>, I opted to make a healthier version of a recipe&nbsp; in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2NqbsT4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Beverly Lewis Amish Cookbook<\/a> that calls for a half cup of oil and sugar per loaf of bread. Eek! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I reduced both the oil and sugar plus swapped in some whole wheat flour. It was moist and lightly sweet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More sugar would have made it too sweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What kind of tomatoes to use for Green Tomato Bread?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to this recipe is to use <strong>unripe tomatoes<\/strong>. Not tomatillos or green zebras that are green when ripe. Well, you can use those, if they are not yet ripe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see from the photos, I used a few tomatoes that were beginning to turn color, but they were still very firm and had very little juices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ripe tomatoes will be too soft and will make the bread mushy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use cherry, grape Roma, beefsteak, etc. any tomato you have as long as they are still hard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go pick a few of your un-ripened tomatoes, or save this recipe for use at the end of the season. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with this delightful bread.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"recipe\"><\/div><div id=\"wprm-recipe-container-19027\" class=\"wprm-recipe-container\" Stir in nuts and raisins.
