For those of you that didn't have a mom that took over the TV on Saturday afternoons to watch cooking shows on PBS, Yan Can Cook featured Yan teaching his audience the intricacies of Chinese cuisine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was kind of goofy, as I recall, but I do love his recipes. Mom even got me an autographed copy of the book which I still have and use regularly. If you want a great, easy to follow cookbook with authentic Chinese recipes, I highly recommend you pick this one up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ingredients for Char Siu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I know the marinade looks like a lot of ingredients, but each one adds to the amazing flavor of the dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>pork shoulder or butt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>low sodium tamari or soy sauce<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hoisin sauce<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ketchup<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rice wine vinegar or other mild clear vinegar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sesame oil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tahini (sesame seed paste)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sugar (or other sweetener)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>grated orange peel (fresh is best, or 1 teaspoon dried)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>minced garlic (fresh is best, or \u2153 teaspoon dried)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>minced ginger (fresh is best, or \u2153 teaspoon dried)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chinese five-spice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>red food coloring&nbsp;(optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The original recipe calls for pork shoulder or butt, however I usually end up using a pork tenderloin to make it a bit less fatty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should be able to easily find the hoisin, sesame oil and tahini in the Asian section of a well stocked grocery store. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinese five spice, along with the hoisin, is essential for this dish. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/thewoksoflife.com\/how-to-make-five-spice-powder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make your own<\/a> with star anise, cinnamon, cloves, fennel and Szechuan pepper (or black pepper). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a final note, I almost never add the food coloring.
