Those little tubs just taste weird to me. And homemade frosting is super easy to make and customize with a variety of additions and substitutions. Like this recipe<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Penuche fudge<\/strong> is made with brown sugar and milk and cooked to caramel-like deliciousness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those of us in See's Candy territory know it as the filling inside the Bordeaux candies (my absolute favorite!). As a matter of fact, I turned some of this cake and frosting into <a href=\"https:\/\/thatrecipe.com\/penuche-truffles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Penuche Truffles<\/strong><\/a> which were a pretty good copycat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This frosting has the same decadent taste in a spreadable format. Just melt some butter and brown sugar, let it cool add a splash of milk then whip in some powdered sugar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Easy, peasy and delicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suggestions to Pair with Penuche Frosting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have made it a few times and paired it with chocolate (brownies as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/thatrecipe.com\/2016\/10\/14\/cake-mix-in-a-jar\/\">the cake<\/a> in the photos).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would also be delicious with a spice cake, <a href=\"https:\/\/thatrecipe.com\/apple-cupcakes-maple-cream-cheese-icing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apple cake<\/a>  or <a href=\"https:\/\/thatrecipe.com\/2015\/02\/24\/light-carrot-cake\/\">carrot cake<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could use it for topping of filling cookies (like these <a href=\"https:\/\/thatrecipe.com\/gingerbread-penuche-sandwich-cookies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gingerbread Sandwich Cookies<\/a>) or whoopie pies or straight off the spoon  ...not that YOU would do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Ingredients <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This recipe uses the same basic ingredients as traditional buttercream frosting with the addition of brown sugar (obviously):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>butter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>brown sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>milk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>vanilla extract<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>powdered sugar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vegan Option: <\/strong>to make this vegetarian or vegan just swap a butter flavored coconut oil (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3OE0Wbm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">like this<\/a>) for the butter and use your favorite non-dairy milk.
